Staying active is one of the best things older adults can do for their health, but traditional exercise classes are not always a good fit. Getting down to the floor, standing for long periods or keeping up with a fast pace can feel intimidating or unsafe.
Chair yoga removes those barriers. Every movement is done seated or with the support of a chair, so residents of almost any ability can take part, build strength and enjoy the social side of moving together.
What is chair yoga?
Chair yoga adapts traditional yoga postures, stretches and breathing exercises so they can be done from a sturdy chair. Sessions focus on gentle movement, joint mobility, posture, balance and relaxation. A certified instructor guides the group and offers modifications so every participant can move at a comfortable level.
Six benefits for older adults
1. Better balance and fewer falls. Seated and supported standing exercises strengthen the muscles that keep us steady, which supports fall prevention and confidence on the move.
2. Improved mobility and less stiffness. Gentle, regular movement helps keep joints flexible, which can ease everyday tasks like reaching, turning and getting up from a chair.
3. Relief for arthritis and joint discomfort. Low impact motion warms the joints without strain and can be adapted for sensitive knees, hips and shoulders.
4. Stronger posture and breathing. Focused breathing and posture work support lung capacity, circulation and a sense of calm.
5. Reduced stress and better mood. The mindful pace of chair yoga helps people relax, sleep better and feel more positive.
6. Social connection. A weekly class gives residents something to look forward to and a chance to connect, which is a powerful defence against loneliness and isolation.
Is chair yoga safe?
For most older adults, chair yoga is one of the safest ways to stay active. Classes should always be led by a certified instructor trained to work with seniors, and participants with specific health conditions should check with their doctor before starting a new exercise program.
